Now that is a great pic! Now that I can see them clearly I don't think I have ever seen any growing in the woods. I was all over in the woods this fall, miles and miles through all kinds of oaks, stumps, logs and branches rotted and decaying. I don't think me or the kids saw anything that remotely resembled those. And with the kids you see it all, they don't miss anything. Tell them to find mushrooms and fungus and they are asking you about every little speck on every log or stump that you pass. Oh well there is always next year.

sure, your best bet is by old stumps or dead fall. If you can find a place with dead fall next to a small mountain stream as in my picture you will usually find them.

Not a sheepshead in that pic.  Pretty sure it is a past prime sulfer shelf aka chicken of the woods.  Looks like it has seen better days,  they are good young if you eat the outer edges.  Wouldnt eat that one.  Sheepshead will grow in more of a ball shape with many overlapping "shelfs"  that are smaller.
